About the orphanage

An orphanage is located at a small Ukrainian village Komarovka, Chernigiv region, Ukraine. It's about 170 km from Kiev. There are about 150 children from 6 to 17 years old there. Most of them are called "social orphans". Their parents are alive but they don't take care of the children. Usually they are alcoholics, don't work, are in prisons and so on. Almost all children have passed through very hard times at the life before they came to the orphanage. We've heard a lot of terrible stories :(.

There are two dormitories for the children. On the right, the older children are housed, and on the left, the younger. All buildings are very old and need repairing. Usually it's very cold inside during winter and kids must sleep in warm clothes, because the heating system is old and also they don't have enough coal.

This is the girls bedroom. There are usually 8 to 13 children living in this room. There are beds, a table and 1 or 2 wardrobes in the room. All the furniture is very old. They haven't got any new furniture during last 18 years. Despite their poverty, the children showed us their rooms proudly. Possibly they didn't have even that at home.

        A classroom

A toilet and a shower. Very sad :(. They had a toilet but it hasn't been working for a long time. So children use a toilet outside. It's far from the buildings, very small for so many children and looks terrible. It's especially hard for children at nights and during winter.

A beautiful greenhouse - incredible achievement at this cold climate
